Make God’s Word visible and accessible this October by participating in National Biblical Awareness Month. During the first Great Awakening, preachers like George Whitefield, John Wesley and Howell Harris began to practice the controversial work of bringing God’s word out of their stone churches and into the open field, making the bible available to all. These “field preachers” and those that followed suit were credited with being a major influence on what was to become a sweeping revival, bringing hope and salvation to the lost, desperate and lonely.

In the spirit of these early spiritual activist, we are calling on Christ’s followers worldwide to untether God’s word from their pews, nightstands and side tables and like the great revivalist of the past, allow it space in the open field of their life.

Want to be a part? Here’s how:

  1. OPEN CARRY your bible for the entire 31 days of October. Take it to school, work, the gym, out to eat or anyplace you regularly go.
  2. READ your bible in the public sphere. Read it on buses, coffee shops, in the school cafeteria and on the recumbent cycle at your gym. One thing to remember is that the point is not to make carrying the bible a show, but rather to allow God’s word to influence you in a new and fresh way this October. If God starts conversation, then great, but the genesis of revival is our own hearts. God’s Word says that, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 1 Chronicles 7:14
  3. GIVE a bible away. As we allow God’s Spirit to influence all the spaces in our lives, it is possible that amazing conversations will arise with the people you come across. Keep extra copies of God’s Word on hand and give them out as God leads. This way, we are making God’s word known in a very practical way.
  4. PRAY. The combination of God’s Word and Prayer are spiritually nuclear. Take 5 minutes each day to specifically pray God’s covering and leading during these 31 days.
